Tunnel rat on the way to work.  We move through heavy jungle on roads cleared by an M-48 tank.  We were obviously in the area of a major tunnel complex.  Connecting trenches.
A B-52 strike which left huge bomb craters had hit very nearby just a few days before we entered the area. Note all of the leaves blown off the trees and on the ground…..  Another tunnel entrance  The NVA had apparently abandoned the area in a hurry. Note the food bowls still on the table.  More trenches.
Back out on the road again. That may be Cpt Visher, B Troop, 1/4 Cav, Commander, in the foreground.  Clearing the road south of Phouc Vinh.  On the road.  Clearing the flanks while securing the road.
Passing a roadside village on the road south of Phouc Vinh.  More of the village.  More of the village.  More of the village.
Engineers (walking) sweep the road for mines while the Cav troop secures the flanks. One of our 113’s had been hit by a command detonated mine shortly before theses two gentlemen in black pajamas bicycled up the road. (Any connection???)  John Girardeau, B Troop forward observer.  Road shots.  Another road shot.
Captured weapons from one of the villages along the way.  More weapons and equipment.  Rubber trees.  On the road again.
More flank security with one of the leg infantry units.  More flank security with one of the leg infantry units.  Set up on the perimeter.  Set up on the perimeter.
In one of John F. Kennedy’s abandoned “Strategic Hamlets”.  John Girardeau, B Troop forward observer, in the command bunker.  SFC Maidai, Lt Girardeau’s recon sgt, shown wearing his Purple Heart on his forehead. (Note: there is a story here that I need to write down…..It is entitled “The Night of the Starlight Room”.)  8-inch firing. It was not one of ours…..I believe it was from the unit over at Ben Cat.

Captured NVA truck. Kennedy’s abandoned “Strategic Hamlets”.  A quiet evening on the perimeter.
A grunt’s work is never done.  8-inch firing. It was not one of ours…..I believe it was from the unit over at Ben Cat.  Stoney Gravelle was on Silver City as the FO with another unit.
