H'mong Woman, Sapa. 1995
The H'mong in Sapa always wear blue. They make
the cloth and dye it themselves. You can tell by the stains on their fingers. I
could not take my eyes off this beautiful woman. I t was sad to see her caught
in the gringo frenzy, mostly European at the time, crowds who circled her and
sought to buy whatever she would sell. Walking back with Seth after a long hike
we passed a young girl cutting rice on the steep side of a hill. Standing up
from the backbreaking work she held the scythe aloft. "Two dollah," she
declared. Then went back to work as we smiled and kept walking.
